Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

United Way of Denton County offers free federal tax preparation assistance for anyone with an income up to (not over) $64,000 per year. This year, United Way's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will be offered at the Library two days a week. No appointment is required. Assistance is provided on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Patrons should bring the following documents:
- Social Security card or ITIN card/letter for everyone on the tax return
- Photo ID with name for taxpayer and spouse
- Employment and other income-related tax documents (i.e. W-2, 1099, etc.)
- Any other official tax-related documents or IRS letters
AARP Tax-Aide

AARP Tax-Aide volunteers provide free tax preparation assistance for basic federal income tax returns. They are unable to assist with returns containing rental properties, or farming or business expenses. They are unable to assist with state income tax returns. Other restrictions may apply.
Tax-Aide is available by appointment only. A limited number of appointments are available.
- Appointments can be made by visiting or calling the Library at 972.219.3779.
- Couples filing jointly only need one appointment.
- Individuals in families filing separately will need separate appointments.
- After making an appointment, patrons should pick up a packet of paperwork to be completed prior to their appointment. Packets will be available for pickup at the Library's drive-up window and inside at the Information Desk. If unable to pick up a packet before their appointment, Tax-Aide volunteers will have the paperwork for the patron at their appointment.
- Patrons should call or visit the Library to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Individuals may reschedule a Tax-Aide appointment if there is an appointment spot still open.
Patrons should bring the following documents to their appointment:
- Photo ID
- Copy of the previous year's income tax return
- Documents related to this year's income tax such:
- W-2, 1099-R forms, Social Security statements, interest and dividend bank statements brokerage accounts, oil or gas royalty statements, etc.
- List of medical expenses broken down to show a total for each item (ex: prescriptions, doctors, eye exams, dental, hearing aids, medical insurance, mileage, etc.)
- List of donations with monetary and non-case donations listed separately
- Documentation of tax paid on major purchases (i.e. home, car, boat)
- Documentation of expenses paid for energy savings projects for your home
- Documentation of paid child care expenses while you worked
