Equipment Training

All Hive equipment training is available online. Additionally, Fusion Pro laser training is currently offered in person a few times each season. Please see below for available dates. Reservation is required due to limited availability.

Hive 101: Fusion Pro Laser Training - Safety, Tips, and More

Thursday, February 19 | 6-7:45 p.m.

This informational training will be packed with everything you need to skip the Helix training and go straight to using the Fusion Pro laser cutter. Learn the basics of engraving and vector cutting on the laser cutter and see the machine in action. Class will begin promptly at 6 p.m.

Open to adults and teens 13 and up. Registration for January 20 opens January 6 at 6 p.m. Registration for February 19 opens February 5 at 6 p.m. Registration for March 24 opens March 10 at 6 p.m. Registration for April 22 opens April 8 at 6 p.m.

Custom Note Boards
Rescheduled for Saturday, February 14 | 2-4 p.m.
The Hive | Registration Required

Learn the basics of sublimation and create a custom wipe-off note board to take home. Designs will be shared and created in Canva. It’s recommended that you create your own Canva account prior to the class, though it is not required. If you have specific images you want to add to your board, please bring them with you on a USB drive or email them to yourself to access in class. All supplies are provided. Open to makers 18 and up. Registration opens January 10 at 2 p.m.

“Light It Up” Soldering Workshop 
Saturday, February 21 | 1:30-3:30 p.m.
The Hive | Registration Required
During this hands-on workshop with guest instructors Carolyn Marco and JC Bigornia of craftybehavior.com, participants will be able to learn how to use a soldering iron or level up their skills. We will create a light up, wearable pin or sculpture with LEDs and copper wire. Beginners welcome! This activity involves hot surfaces, so participants will need to be able to practice caution. Open to makers 16 and up. Registration opens Feb. 7 at 1:30 p.m.

Decorative Stitches: Visible Mending with Skye Rayburn
Saturday, February 28 | 1-4 p.m.

Mend with flair in this visible mending workshop led by Skye Rayburn (Isle of Skye Studio)! Learn the basics of patching and reinforcing fabric, with a focus on decorative techniques that turn wear and tear into a slow fashion statement. We'll cover running, joining, and whip stitches, and blend these various stitches into unique patterns. You'll leave with the skills to confidently restore and embellish textile surfaces, extending the life of your favorite garments and adding a unique, personalized touch to your wardrobe and other projects. Participants may bring items to mend if they wish. All experience levels are welcome. Open to makers 13 and up. Registration opens February 14 at 1 p.m.

Fairy Garden Diorama 
Thursday, March 5 | 6–7:30 pm

Learn how to make your own magical fairy garden diorama, complete with mushrooms, leaves and even your own fairy, all inside an Altoid tin! All materials will be provided. Please only register for one session. Adults only. Registration for March 5 opens Feb. 19 at 6 p.m.; Registration for March 7 opens Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.

Sew It, Cinch It: Drawstring Pouches
Saturday, March 14 | 1-4 p.m.
The Hive | Registration Required 

Join us to learn machine sewing basics! In just a few hours, you'll master: straight stitching, backstitching, and creating a fabric casing as you construct a set of three drawstring pouches. This is a great project for sewing beginners—it requires no previous experience! Once you know how to sew simple straight seams, you'll be ready to tackle everything from tote bags to customized throw pillows at home. Open to makers 13 and up. Registration opens February 28 at 1 p.m.

Pressed Flowers
Rescheduled for Thursday, March 19 | 6-7:30 p.m. 
The Hive | Registration Required

In this workshop, we will create beautiful artwork with natural pressed flowers. Our instructor will demonstrate the process of pressing your own flowers step by step and share helpful tips and tricks to achieve the best results. Then, you’ll create your own 8×10 art piece using real pressed flowers. All materials will be provided, including a rainbow of natural blooms to work with. All supplies are provided. Open to makers 18 and up. REGISTRATION IS FULL.

LED Embroidery Constellation
Saturday, March 21 | 1:30-4 p.m.
The Hive | Registration Required

Participants will use fabric, conductive thread, and LEDs to create an illuminated constellation. This is a beginner-level e-textile project. No prior experience with sewing or electronics is necessary. Open to makers 13 and up. Registration opens March 7 at 1:30 p.m.

Teen Night @ the Hive: Painted Rocks

Thursday, March 12 | 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Use your creativity to paint rocks in different ways. Will you paint to support a fandom, show your school spirit, or paint a landscape? Whatever you choose, the rocks are your canvases. Enjoy this chill activity. All supplies are free. Teens 13-18 only. Registration opens February 26 at 9 a.m.

Arduino for Absolute Beginners
Saturday, April 11 | 1:30-3 p.m.
The Hive | Registration Required 

This workshop is for those who want to know, “what is this Arduino thing?” We will walk you through the first exercises in our SparkFun Inventor’s Kits (version 4.0a), such as blinking an LED, using a potentiometer and photoresistor. Participants are encouraged to use our laptops, as we cannot troubleshoot issues on participants’ own devices. The Redboard closely resembles Arduino Uno. Specifications of the kit components and exercises can be found at learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/sparkfun-inventors-kit-experiment-guide---v40/.This workshop is for people with no Arduino experience; no advanced programming concepts will be covered. Attendees should be comfortable with computers. Open to makers 16 and up. Registration opens March 28 at 1:30 p.m.

Speed Paint Your Miniature Figures
Saturday, May 2 | 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
The Hive | Registration Required

Learn the fundamentals of speed painting your miniature game figurines in this interactive session. Our presenter will show you the way to drybrush and speed paint using a selection of colors in less time than when painting with the traditional method. All supplies are provided. Open to makers 13 and up.  Registration for January 10 opens December 27 at 11 a.m. Registration for May 2 opens April 18 at 11 a.m.

Zip It Up: The Essential Tool Bag

Saturday, May 9 | 1-4 p.m.

Ready to level up your sewing skills? This workshop is your chance to demystify the zipper! We'll focus on intermediate techniques like: installing a zipper with a lining, working with the zipper foot, and sewing multiple layers for a clean, professional-looking finish. This finished bag is perfect for tools, pencils, or other supplies. The skills you gain will give you the confidence to tackle projects like garment pockets and structured bags! Open to makers 13 and up. Registration opens April 25 at 1 p.m.
