The Disaster Distress Helpline is a 24/7 national hotline dedicated to providing immediate crisis counseling for people who are experience emotional distress related to any natural or human-caused disaster. Multilingual assistance is available and counseling is confidential. Referrals to local disaster-related resources are available for follow-up support.
Avoid Scams
- Government entities such as the Department of Homeland Security, FEMA, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention never charge for disaster assistance.
- Guard your personal information. Do not disclose information to any unsolicited telephone calls and e-mails. Do not trust anyone who offers financial help and then asks for money or personal information.
- Beware of visits, calls, or emails from people claiming to be from FEMA asking for your Social Security number, bank account or other sensitive information. Giving out this type of information can lead to identify theft.
- The Texas Department of Insurance is warns people to be aware of potential contracting scams as they begin making repairs. Check the IDs, licenses, and proof of insurance of any contractor or repair company before paying them. Get quotes and work plans in writing.
