Freegal Music+ Frequently Asked Questions

Freegal Music+ is an ad-free music service offering over 18 million songs from thousands of artists and music labels including Sony Music, Epic, RCA, and Columbia. Thousands of songs are added each month.

Access to Freegal is limited to patrons of subscribing libraries. Lewisville Public Library patrons can log into Freegal with their library card number and PIN.

Enjoy Freegal Music+ via web browser on a computer or on a mobile devices with the Freegal Music app for iOS and Android. The app is available in the Apple store, Google Play store, and Amazon app store.

Music downloaded from Freegal is stored locally on your mobile device and will be removed if the app is deleted. On your computer, you can choose to download to your hard drive or a separate volume.

Download

When you download a song from Freegal, you can keep the file on a permanent basis. Lewisville library cardholders may download up to five (5) songs per week. The download limit resets every Monday at 12 a.m. CST. 

Music downloaded from Freegal is stored locally on your mobile device and will be removed if the app is deleted. On your computer, you can choose to download to your hard drive or a separate volume. It is highly recommended that patrons backup their files locally or in the cloud. 

If your download was lost or incomplete, you have up to two downloads per song available. Once you have downloaded a song two times, the song title disappears from your list and is no longer available to download.

Stream 

Streaming is accessing the file on a temporary basis while being connected to the Internet. Streaming gives you access to more music since downloads are limited. Lewisville library cardholders can enjoy unlimited streaming. 

Some songs on Freegal Music+ have download rights from the artist’s label restricting downloads to the entire album. Since Freegal allows downloads of only individual songs and not entire albums, they cannot legally offer the songs on "download restricted" albums for download.

Due to licensing restrictions, some songs and albums are “download only.” These songs are not eligible for streaming.

The music you access via the Freegal Music+ site is for non-commercial purposes only. It comes with a license for personal use only. This means that you cannot duplicate it for others, or play it in public—other than for the intended enjoyment of a normal circle of family and friends.

With macOS Catalina, your iTunes media library is now available in the Apple Music app, Apple TV app, Apple Books app and Apple Podcasts app. The iTunes app is no longer supported on newer devices. Use a search engine to learn the best way to sync your music.

If you have a PC, you can continue to use iTunes for Windows to manage your media library, make purchases and manually sync and manage your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

To retrieve music from your Android device, the easiest method is to plug your Android device into your PC or Mac. On a PC, once you connect your device, driver software should install automatically—if not already installed. For troubleshooting on a specific device, please check the Android
forums.

If this does not work, open up Computer to see your device. Choose to browse Internal Storage, then open the folder titled Freegal Music. Inside this folder, you will see another folder labeled with your patron card number. This folder contains all of your Freegal Music+ downloads that you have downloaded through the Freegal Music+ app. Simply drag this folder to your desktop, and once the transfer is complete, you can then move the songs wherever you’d like on your computer.

On a Mac, depending on the version of Android, you’ll need some additional software. For Android 2.3, you can plug the device in and select the option (on the Android device) to mount as a disk. From this point, you can find the device through the Finder. Open the device and find the folder titled Freegal Music. Inside this folder will be your patron barcode folder. You can then drag this
folder to your desktop. Once it copies, you can drag it straight into iTunes or Music on an Apple computer.

For Android 4.0 or newer, you can download the Android File Transfer software at android.com/filetransfer. When you plug your Android device into your Mac, it will open and you will see the file system of your device. Open the Freegal Music folder and drag your patron barcode folder to your desktop. From there, you will be able to move your music around your Mac and into the Apple Music app.

Due to licensing agreements, Freegal is not able to restore music that has been lost once downloaded to your device or computer. You would need to download the songs again to restore them. Weekly download limits would apply. 

You have up to two downloads per song available. Once you have downloaded a song two times, the song title disappears from your list and is no longer available to download.

Again, once music is downloaded from Freegal, it is yours to keep. Backing up your devices is always recommended, but if you elect not to do this and your files are lost, Freegal cannot restore your downloaded music.
